Shakespeare's Globe Education Program: Academics
This three-week Globe Education intensive theater program will give students a unique opportunity to study on-site at the Globe Theatre, learning from professional theater practitioners including actors, directors, designers and musicians on the very spot where Shakespeare worked. Lectures and seminars will be supplemented by movement and voice workshops, scene rehearsals, question and answer sessions with Company members, a visit to the Globe exhibition, a backstage tour and combat and sword play workshops. The program will focus on the material and cultural contexts for English Renaissance drama and theater and on the history and process of construction of both the original and the reconstructed Globe Theatres. Students will be required to develop critical responses to theatrical performances and will be required to perform in a short Shakespeare scene in order to examine and fully appreciate the relationship between dramatic language, physicality and theater space.
Attendance
Attendance at all classes is mandatory. Participants will be given a list of suggested reading, including the plays of focus from the theater season. Students will have two to three short assignments to complete during the program (for example, critical reviews of the theater performances) and a short reflective journal of the scene rehearsal process of around 4000 words.
Grades
No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.
