New for Fall 2012: Study Abroad in Havana, Cuba, with Presbyterian College

Presbyterian College, located in Clinton, South Carolina, offers students the unique opportunity to live and study in Cuba. AIFS is working with Presbyterian College to provide information about this opportunity to interested students. Presbyterian College has partnered with the University of Havana, enabling students to develop an understanding of the Cuban experience from a Cuban perspective, evaluate Western experiences against those of former colonies, and gain a new understanding of the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba.

Why study in Cuba?

  • Take advantage of the unique academic experience – courses in history, political science, sociology, business and Spanish language are available
  • Create independent studies in courses both within and outside the humanities
  • Travel to several different provinces in Cuba outside of Havana on optional excursions
  • Expand your worldview – the program emphasizes different viewpoints, sympathy with other cultural perspectives, and building a sense of global responsibility by studying Cuba's place in the world
  • Enjoy the natural and historic attractions of Cuba. Optional tours are available to students to explore the island.

 

Program at a Glance

  • Program dates for Fall 2012: August 27 - December 7, 2012
  • Earn 12-15 credits through Presbyterian College/Unviersity of Havana
  • Take courses in Cuban History, Politics, and Society; US-Cuban Relations; and Spanish language. A variety of courses in Spanish is available to students fluent in Spanish
  • Independent study courses in history, social sciences, and literature are also possible
  • Complete 80 hours of directed activities in the City of Havana, including encounters with staff members of health, educational, and political institutions, as well as with elected representatives of mass organizations of workers, women, students, neighborhoods, and farmers
  • Students live in a University-approved residence and receive some meals in the residence
  • Optional excursions to Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo, Playa Girón and Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Santa Clara, Pinar del Rio, and Veradero
  • Fall semester program fee: $15,995 (fees with optional travel package will be announced shortly)

About Havana

Historically a port city that played a principle role in the Spanish Empire, Havana is a vibrant city with many attractions for tourists of all kinds, including students. Thanks to the restoration of the historic section of the city known as Old Havana, Havana is a principal destination of the two million international tourists who travel annually to Cuba. Located twenty minutes by taxi from the student residence, Old Havana offers restaurants, museums, and sites of historic significance.
